00:55:00 Steven Fawkes: Visual also forfacial expression
00:55:10 Nuno: A quick question to the team. Do you have any book or papers published regarding the use of film for language education? If so, please let us know. It would be helpful to understand and study more.
00:55:36 Isabelle Vanderschelden: Yes there will be some references at the end
00:55:52 Nuno: That’s very good, thanks!
01:03:05 Fatima Khaled: I totally agree with you. My students create their own personal films and they have always to use the creativity and work as a team which they enjoy a lot.
01:03:30 Fatima Khaled: They also take the lead of the learning of Arabic.
01:03:30 Noha Mohama-Akkari: I assign a film in every semester for the students to watch on their own or in class. The assignment is to write in English a paper to critique and give their own point of view and write about any cultural differences, etc.
01:04:23 Noha Mohama-Akkari: The reason I teach beginners and intermediate levels, it will not be easy to write a paper in Arabic. Mostly the purpose of the film is cultural
01:04:26 Isabelle Vanderschelden: that is a very relevant type of exercise in today’s workshop context. it links understanding appreciation and critical thinking
01:04:39 Fatima Khaled: There is lot off emotions involved when the students create their own films.
01:05:13 Isabelle Vanderschelden: for reviews the language can be very simple and beginners too could react as to what they like or don’t like for example
01:05:40 Najwa Kadhim: very deep
01:05:52 Najwa Kadhim: I like these ideas
01:05:55 Fatima Zahra Ahmed Sid: @NohaMohama-Akkari could you please share with us which films have you used with your students?
01:06:08 Steven Fawkes: I think pictures and moving picture are great for stirring up curiosity and encouraging learners to ask questions in the language we are learning
01:06:48 Isabelle Vanderschelden: Examples of films are in the Padlet and can also be sent as file at the end of the workshop
01:07:56 Fatima Zahra Ahmed Sid: Excellent! Thank you.
01:09:45 Fatima Khaled: Can you send the link of the film please. Thank you.
01:10:02 Eva Youssef: It’s still the same (in the chat above)
01:10:05 Isabelle Vanderschelden: https://youtu.be/VccSG0u0DdE
01:10:16 Fatima Khaled: Thank you.
01:15:26 Fatima Khaled: I have watch yes the film. I noticed that there was always very close camera to the food because the aim of the film is how the food can affect your health if not used properly.
01:15:27 Hala Afify: Can I suggest that participants use the ‘raise your hand’ when wanting to share their thoughts.
01:16:05 Najwa Kadhim: نوع الفيلم قصير توعوي ، birds eye shot on the food and gathering and eating from the same plate. showing the dancing from the back first then from the front to show the participation of the main film actor in physical activities and awareness of healthy habits.
01:17:05 Noha Mohama-Akkari: The films I showed last semester and the spring one:
01:17:24 Noha Mohama-Akkari: Things Arab Men Say by Nasreen Baker
01:17:24 Hala Afify: The use of music is very well utilized. The fast tempo during all the scenes that involve food consumption, then it gradually fades as if it is too getting tired of the amount of food
01:17:51 Noha Mohama-Akkari: Bittersweet
01:18:05 Hala Afify: Also, there is not much eligible speech at the beginning but as the message of the film is hammered in the words are clearer
01:18:10 Noha Mohama-Akkari: Caramel by Nadine Labake
01:18:39 Noha Mohama-Akkari: Where do we go now by Nadine Labakeهلق لوين
01:19:10 Noha Mohama-Akkari: Hassan and Marcos
01:19:15 Isabelle Vanderschelden: good to see the reactions and the aspects that strike you
01:19:26 Bahia: Camera moves from medium shot to close up shot for effects and to show the emotion of the character and his relation with the food. Also close up on the food to shoe the richness and the mouth.
01:20:04 Najwa Kadhim: I love Bitter sweet
01:20:32 Sanaa Jouejati: the collaboration of the varied elements lead to the climax of the film: the decision to take charge, be stronger to face the cultural pressures. the music buildup the tension.
01:21:06 Noha Mohama-Akkari: You are mute
01:23:11 Fatima Khaled: Very good analysis. I like the way you linked the drums with the heart beating. Thank you.
01:23:52 Bahia: The music expresses the pressure that was put on the character to partake of the food.
01:40:29 Isabelle Vanderschelden: for example discuss how the use of close up of food has an effect on the viewer?
01:41:33 Hala Afify: Evaluate the importance of starting the film with the graduation ceremony?
01:42:08 Noha: I am really enjoying this meeting. Unfortunately, I have a meeting now and have to leave. Thank you very much.
01:42:22 Steven Fawkes: ‘bye !
01:42:28 Hamida Azebache: identify some socio-cultural signs and compare them to yours
01:42:44 Hala Afify: Discuss the importance of maintaining the value of hospitality in the Arab world.
01:42:51 Najwa Kadhim: consider yourself in his shoes what would you do?
01:43:08 Noha Mohama-Akkari: I had same idea as Najwa
01:43:09 Hamida Azebache: discuss the pressure of the community on the individuals
01:43:17 Steven Fawkes: Describe how his emotions change ?
01:43:26 Mohammad Abu Shuleh (he/him/his): ماذا ستفعل لو كنت مكان عوض:)
01:43:50 Hala Afify: Do you think the message of the film is strong enough?
01:44:12 Fatima Khaled: In pair work, discuss the camera shots in the different
stages of the films.
01:44:31 Isabelle Vanderschelden: How about : how does the character show expressions of politeness in his reactions?
01:44:46 Bahia: Thank you!
