We thank Joe Dale for co-ordinating the TiLT (Technology in Language Teaching) series of webinars, bringing together teachers who are interested in developing their use of technology in their teaching. As well as enhancing our skills, we also get to meet other ‘keenies’ from across the globe, and can get to know each other informally by chatting before, during and after the webinar.
We also thank the presenters, who give freely of their time and expertise. Where possible, most sessions are recorded and available for viewing later.
Given that language primarily exists to facilitate communication, interaction in that language must have an important role to play in developing a learner’s ability in that language. In other words, instructors need to promote learner interaction in order to help the learners succeed. There are many ways to learn a foreign language using media such as watching movies, listening to music or even reading foreign magazines. However, most people can agree that playing games and using interactive tasks is by far one of the best ways to learn a new language!
Game-based learning should not be confused with gamification. With game-based learning, the whole process is a well-organized learning environment within a game.
Interactive tasks and games provide language practice in the various skills – speaking, writing, listening and reading. They encourage students to interact and communicate and they create a meaningful context for language use. Games also lend themselves well to revision exercises helping learners recall material in a pleasant, entertaining way.
This workshop equips you with the tools to use creativity and interactive games in your classroom to promote learning and language development. You will learn how to create interactive group activities requiring creative thinking skills; and plan a collaborative language lesson involving auditory, visual, and tactile tools. This presentation focuses on the use of Google Jamboard, a free online platform that allows you to design interactive tasks such as role-plays, storytelling, text annotations, board games for grammar & vocab drills, matching activities, passing the ball and more to spark collaboration in your classroom!
WELCOME TO OUR PRESENTER
I joined the University of Chicago in 2018 and started teaching the German language from novice to advanced mid, including the Intensive Course in German. My family emigrated from Iran to Germany when I was only forty days old. Raised in Heidelberg, German was my native language. I completed my undergraduate studies in German at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, and my graduate studies in German Translation at the University of Tehran. I came to the U.S. in 2012 and obtained another graduate degree in Germanic Studies from Purdue University. Before coming to the University of Chicago, I taught introductory German courses for two years at Purdue University and was also responsible for the German Culture Club. In 2016, I then joined the team at the Goethe Institute in Chicago where I continue to teach to this day. At the University of Chicago, I designed the course curriculum for the second and third quarters of the Intensive Course sequence together with a course called Germany today. In addition to teaching, I am also responsible for organizing and coordinating cultural and social events for students in the language program, and anyone interested in the German language and culture. I also serve as the sponsor of the German Club at the University of Chicago.
My teaching and research interests include foreign language pedagogy, technology integration in language teaching, and revisiting songs in language pedagogy. I am currently working on technology integration in language teaching and leveraging music to facilitate language learning.
