It was great to have such a good turn-out of 'Saturday morning keenies' to our June Event, generously hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute in their sumptuous building (thanks to Lisa Zaffi for arranging this), our coffee sponsored by Hodder & Stoughton (an ALL corporate sponsor, contacted by our 'corporate liaison man', Stéphane), and organised and run by the London ALL Committee who all 'mucked in' to take money, put up posters, give out sheets, host sessions ... thanks to them!
We are especially grateful to our speakers, Lesley Welsh and Helen Groothues who were simply inspiring, sharing practical and effective techniques through their engaging and dynamic presentations. We'll put a few notes about their sessions here soon. Here's an extract from what Prim wrote about the event...:
I
heard two inspirational speakers, Lesley Welsh and Helen Groothues. They really
were just lovely. I often think in situations like this that the true test is
how I would feel should I be given the opportunity to be a pupil of theirs. And
the answer would be that I just wouldn' t be able to wait for my next language
lesson. However, I don' t think our Lesley will be a teacher in Hartlepool
for much longer - she's far too good! You could go on the stage, lass! (Well,
she called me rough and northern.... Nick Mair coordinated a really helpful and focused session where five members of our committee shared their personal experiences of 'alternative accreditation' before answering questions from the delegates. The session was designed to give quality time for question/answer, with Powerpoint presentations prepared as 'stand-by' if needed. This approach seemed to work really well ... presenters were not tied to slides, and delegates had time to ask questions. This will have a practical outcome, as there is clearly a great need for teachers to share not only their experiences, but also the resources which they prepare relating to the new schemes. Helen will try to coordinate something for this soon. Please email her if you want to join in! Click here to download related documents.
There was a lovely atmosphere throughout as people got to know other better over coffee and an Italian-style buffet lunch, prepared by Massimo. Thanks to EVERYONE who came for making it such a POSITIVE morning!

Thanks to Ulrich who designed our certificates of attendance with its Leaning Tower of Pisa watermark and who also took some photos. As always, please do not hesitate to contact Helen if you would like any photos removed! No questions asked!
More feedback from people who attended...
I thought it was another really good event - well done! (Caroline)
It was the first ALL meeting for me, very informative and enjoyable. I now need to spend the summer improving my smartboard skills not to mention stocking up on primary resources. (another Caroline!)
Great day yesterday - primary session was outstanding. (Nick)
Thank you for a really useful morning yesterday and the opportunity to discuss several burning issues! (Martin)
DETAILS ABOUT THE SESSIONSPrimary/Transition Languages with Helen Groothues, CILT Primary TeamHELEN GROOTHUES, Primary Language Teaching Adviser,
CILT, The National Centre for Languages
Session: In this lively, practical session, Helen will look at a range
of primary teaching techniques that promote transferable skills. She will link
these to the Key Stage 2 Framework, in particular to the strands of Knowledge
about Language, Language Learning Strategies and Intercultural Understanding. Bio: Helen Groothues began her teaching career as a teacher of modern
languages (French and German) in a large girls’ comprehensive in South London.
She then taught in Paris for two years, before returning to London and
retraining as a primary teacher. Helen worked in a vibrant inner London primary
school as class teacher, EMA coordinator and Modern Foreign Languages
coordinator before joining CILT in September 2006. Recommendations: "What enthusiasm and knowledge. It has been really inspirational and I
can’t wait to try your ideas out." "You really showed how learning languages can be fun." "I can’t think of a better way to spend 2 hours on a Wednesday
afternoon!" "An excellent session, very well presented – it has given me lots of
ideas!"
Session: In the session Lesley will demonstrate tried and tested techniques which can be used the next day in the classroom to reinvigorate pupils (and teachers)! Lively interactive examples using ActivStudio 2 and ACTIVote will be shared, as well as a variety of websites which Lesley uses to great effect with pupils from across the age and ability range.
Recommendations: 'Lesley would be a good teacher if she had only a stick to draw in the sand with. With the technology, she is a great teacher, keenly aware of the impact that ICT can have on pupils.' (Jack Kenny, TES. )
Alternative Accreditation - the Practitioners' Perspective!
Our committee members shared their experiences of alternatives to GCSE, including Asset Languages, The British Flag Award, OCR's CBLC, AQA Entry Level and Pre-U. The delegates asked questions, and there was a strong feeling that we needed to share not only our experiences, but also the resources we prepare which relate to the courses. Contact Helen if you want to be added to such a 'self-help' group.
