The Primary French Project
These teaching/self-training materials are offered freely to all UK primary and secondary schools by the Institut français du Royaume-Uni (IFRU), downloadable from www.institut-francais.org.uk/primaryfrench. The materials guide the teacher in meeting the requirements of the Programme of Study for languages in KS2, with strong links to the PoS for English in KS2. There are PowerPoint presentations with visuals and sound to offer full support and save preparation time, as well as full lesson plans and printable material. This workshop will be lively and interactive, and will be of interest to all who teach French in the primary phase, as well as to secondary teachers of French who wish to gain a deeper understanding of children’s prior learning and experience in French.
Catherine Cheater
Catherine Cheater is an author, consultant and teacher with an expertise in the field of languages in the primary school in the UK. She has worked as a local authority consultant, and was also Senior Language Teaching Advisor (Primary) at CILT, The National Centre for Languages. She was one of the authors of the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages (DfE, 2002), and has since published a range of primary resources including the Catherine Cheater Schemes of Work for French (KS2).
Now semi-retired, Catherine continues to run professional development training for teachers, and especially to promote the Primary French Project. She undertakes occasional work for CBeebies and other associated production companies. In her leisure time, she enjoys walking, singing in her local church choir and spending time with her family.
Steven Fawkes – LIVE – for one session only?
Steven will explore the ways in which Language teachers can exploit songs in the classroom in order to engage and stimulate learners to respond, remember and learn to use language.
Steven Fawkes has twice been President of the Association for Language Learning, for which he is now a Trustee and Membership Officer. Since 2013 he has also been a Fellow of the Association.
He is Chair of the ALL Branch in the North-East of England and is closely involved with the work of several Special Interest Groups within the Association, as well as other projects.
Steven previously taught Languages in County Durham and worked as Advisory Teacher there in Special and Comprehensive schools.
Subsequently at the BBC he worked on developing TV, radio, print and Internet resources for Languages in Schools and later took the overview of Policy in the whole Schools area.
He is author of articles and books for Language learners and teachers, was a Chair of Governors at a Language College and currently spends most of his time volunteering for ALL.
In the 1990s Steven wrote ‘With a scheme of work’ for CiLT and is now working on a new edition for ALL.
Sometimes the little things…make a big difference
Small step-changes in our practice can sometimes have a significant impact on the learning in our classrooms. In this session Rachel shares some changes in her thinking and practice, informed by the research-led and practice-informed work with NCELP. As always, you will hear practical ideas and see a variety of resources for use in the classroom tomorrow (well, Monday, anyway!)
Dr Rachel Hawkes is an influential and renowned speaker as well as past President of the Association for Language Learning (ALL), an experienced Head of Modern Languages, AST and SLE. She has both MEd and PhD from Cambridge University, focusing on teacher and learner interaction in the secondary languages classroom and is currently Co-Director NCELP, the newly established National Centre for Excellence for Language Pedagogy.
Engagement in Language Learning – DEFERRED TO JANUARY EVENT
This session will offer practical ideas for speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to prepare pupils to achieve their best and to aid progression from KS3 to KS4. There will be a lot of activities/ resources presented and that can be adapted straight away for your own teaching. The session will be interactive and practical.
Jennifer Wozniak is Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning and Specialist Leader of Education in T&L and MFL at The Hollins, Lancashire. She previously taught for nine years at Broughton High School in Preston and has a wide experience of teaching French from KS2 to KS4. Jennifer has spoken at national conferences and also been involved in school-to-school support. She has a real passion for language learning and making sure that pupils enjoy and are enthused about MFL.
